Mid-July arrives and hundreds and hundreds of wild organic berries show up on the farm, as they do year after year. They are the sweetest, prettiest berries and it’s hard not to keep picking them. If you don’t, they’ll just drop to the ground and be gone in a few short weeks.
We’ve been doing a lot of wineberry picking during our last week on Reihman Road. We eat them right off the bush as we’re picking, on vanilla ice cream at the end of a hot day, in cereal or yogurt in the morning and this year I decided to try something new – Wineberry Cordial! Because everyone could use a little cocktail or two this year – 2020 you’ve been an interesting one!

Wineberry Cordial
Ingredients:
3 cups of wineberries
3 cups vodka
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
Prep
Place wineberries in a sterilized glass container with a lid. Muddle the berries until they are good and smashed. Add vodka to the container. Cover the container and place it in the refrigerator for at least 3 weeks.
Strain the cordial through a find mesh sieve. Discard solid berries.
Bring sugar and water to a boil while stirring. Add the sugar syrup to the cordial a little at a time until it is the sweetness you choose. Return cordial to container and store at room temp.
Serve! Late summer-winter to your most deserving guest!
